New Hobby

Confession time! Over the years or I have picked up a bad habit that is quickly turning into an addiction. What may you ask has become my downfall? Simply put: Greeting Cards. Yup those things you actually have to go to a store and purchase in person... the things that need to be hand written and on some occasions actually have to be stamped and put in a mail box.

How did this happen? It was all quite innocent I assure you. One day at work four years ago, I was expressing how I had suddenly found myself in the need to rush out and buy a card for a birthday I had forgotten about and didn't know where I would find the time to do it. A coworker called me over to her desk and there it began. She opened her desk drawer, reached way back and produced a box. Inside the box was about a dozen greeting cards "Have a look through these and if you find one you can use, help yourself. I've got lots." I looked at her kind of suspiciously and asked her where she got all these cards. "I browse the card stores every so often and buy the cards I like and keep them handy in case I need one like you do now." She then proceeded to pull them out one by one and showed them to me, explaining why she had liked it and who it might be sent to in the future. The cards ranged every emotion and occasion you could possibly think of. There were cards of congratulations, sympathy, new jobs, birthdays, anniversaries, encouragement, being there, the list went on and on. This friend of mine was well into her addiction and confessed this was only part of her collection, she had another box at home.

Then another confession "Sometimes when I need it, she explained in a hushed voice, I just open the box and read through them and put them back without even sending one to someone, they just make me happy." She then suggested we go for lunch at the mall and she'd show me all the great places to find just the right cards, the good cards, the stores with the best selections etc.

You're kidding me right? Could someone really be that into Greeting Cards? Little did I know that this was the person the rest of the office went to when they found themselves in a pinch needing a card or note . When people were really strapped for a card they came to her desk with money in their hands and actually bought them from her, she was dealing greeting cards right there in the office! When I gave it more thought I realized it really wasn't much different from the collection of chocolate bars I had in my desk drawer, just fewer calories. I was the person in the office you went to when you needed a chocolate fix and yes I admit it, I have taken money from people for a Snickers!

It wasn't long before I found myself cruising the stores for greeting cards. I now have a fairly substantial collection and I have been known to purchase cards for people and hang onto them for a year until their birthday comes or for just the right occasion. But now I think I have gone that one step further. I feel the urge to create! I want to start making my own greeting cards! Now that I have a computer, digital camera and photos what's stopping me? Well how about more photos and witty comments! Here is where you the loyal Leaving Lois reader comes in. I'm going to post photos and ask for your clever comments that you think match the photo. If would like to email me some photos of your own, I would be happy to include them in my collection too. Who knows you may one day receive a greeting card from me with one of your own picutres or photos on it.

Indulge me and send me your stuff and we'll see where this goes.
