Snap, Crackle, Pop!
Well, I've done it, I've chosen a title for this thing, Leaving Lois. Don't know why I like that title so much but it does feel right to me. The winner of the naming contest goes to Ms. Pigdump herself. Congratulations you are the big winner!
Now on to bigger and blogger things. Want to know what is really eating at me? What it is that has been brewing in me for the last week? Want to know what makes me want to scream? Here's the background: My eldest daugther is a Spark, that's the group of girls in guiding that come before Brownies, and I am a leader in her unit. I like the girls, I like the Girl Guide organization, I like the other leadres, I like planing activites and outings and crafts, but you know what really gets to me?
It's the parents of the girls!!
Do they not get it that I am there for my daughter and theirs, volunteering, giving of what little free personal time I have to enriching the lives of their young girls? Setting an example, a role model of what it is to be a modern Canadian Woman (ok maybe that is a bit of a stretch) Last weekend we took the girls on an overnight camping trip. It was a district outing, meaning that all the girls in our district went, the Sparks, the Brownies, the Guides etc. In an effort to keep our camping costs down we asked the parents of each of the Sparks to send along a dozen cookies, cupcakes, muffins or rice krispie squares to help with our snacks and desserts. Guess what?, and you are never going to believe this, for every person who signed up to bring rice krispie squares, (which was the first item signed up for because of the simplicity of them) they brought store bought rice krispie squares!!! What is up with that??? What could be easier than whipping up a batch of rice krispie squares???? What happened to home baked goodness? Everybody knows how to make rice krispie squares, everyone loves the rice krispie square, for goodness sake, even husbands can make these and not go wrong!!
You know what really, really gets me, when it comes to selling the Girl Guide cookies next month, I bet each of these parents sells less than one case because they will say they are too expensive (now $4.00 a box) and that they can make their own cookies much cheaper. I'll keep you posted on how that goes too. There, I have said it and put it in writing and I feel much better. Now I am going to go and make some of my Auntie Margaret's Mars Bar Rice Krispie squares.
